“POST 7: How my WLE project is going”
So far its looking bad for my WLE project. I need to come up with another idea. I had a plan to do an inspirational thing to help kids want to try harder to get better scores on the success maker program that me and my mentor run. But as i was explaining my idea to my mentor, he told me they tried it before and it didnt come out well. So now I think what Im going to do is find out about Success Maker and the types of questions and tricks to the program. Then creat a poster with keys to solving the style of problems that success maker provides so some kids do great, and some can improve.
“POST 5: Friday Dec. 17th, Hours and Project”
What I've done once again was be of assistence to my teacher during the day. It was relaxed since it was the last day before the break. We all chilled, I actualy completed some homework for school there. I also stayed after school for a little while to help the kids make homeade icecream which looked pretty good. I didnt try it though. I am ahead in hours. I have been to my internship all days plus one that wasnt mandatory. If the actually hour time is 35, i should have about 38 to 40 hours. I wasnt to far ahead. My WLE essential question I actualy have not confirmed yet. Neither have I done the thesis. This is something I will do and discuss with my mentor while doing my project. Basically though my project is running the class called sucess maker which is a computer program full of cartoon games for all subjects and grade levels to help kids learn more. So far what I have collected is data from the scores of the kids in grade levels recorded. What I would like to get is like a comparison. A student score on the test before sucess maker, and their score after. See any improvement. But I think its way to late for that.
“POST 4: Friday Dec. 10th, Leadership Skills”
I am using the skills of thinking critically and collaborating productively and communicate powerfully. I use thinking critically by figuring out the best ways to help the students gain a better understanding of work for my project. I use collaborating productively when I am helping to run the classroom with my mentor. I use communicating powerfully when I am not sure on how to help out a student, and I go to my mentor and ask for help on how to do something. I think I am gaining the same skills I could learn in the classroom. My role as a student is different than my role as an intern because at school, I am the student. At work, I am the teacher. So i see both sides.
Intro Post: How I got my WLE: Oct. 26th
I got my internship pretty easily. This is what happened. First of all, what I wanted to do for my WLE this year was try to work at a car dealership. For example just like washing the cars, or maybe being a car salesman and once i pull them in, give them to an actual representative. So after wasting my time calling a million dealerships, it was about that time that i had one by now. So i knew that i would always have a spot at my old internship, so i gave my old mentor a call and now i am back at Howard Elementary. The leadership skills that I used were Effective Communication. My mentor is Keary Flagg who is the site coordinator for the after school program at Howard Elementary School located in East Oakland,Ca. There I will be doing a documentary project on the whole program.
“POST 13: How my WLE project is going”
My internship was fun today. I had a lot of interactions with my mentor today. He was helping me out about more sugggestions on what to do for my WLE presentation for exhibition. Today, what I mainly did was take pictures most of the day. I also made a short video. Besides that, I also started planning on what im going to say in each slide for my presentation. I dont have a schedualed time on preparation for the exhibition, but I know forsure that I have more than enough time to finish it at the rate im going.
Post 12:"How my WLE project is going”
This week for my Wle project, what i had planned to do was starst taking a lot of pictures of the kids, and the classes while they were doing their activities. Unfortunatly, my camera ran out of batteries and i had no money nor the time to go back down the hill to a store and get some. But I have some now, so I will be ready for this coming wednesday. What I planned to do for my WLE project is to craete a slideshow showing the comparison of what I thought the after scool program is, with my look at it now, after seeing the in's and out's of the whole program. I was going to also show what the afterschool program is about with pictures and examples of great activities being done there. To finish this in the next three weeks, im just going to get all the pictures I can, then at school, I will upload them and start making my slideshow.
Post 11: Mentor Interview
My mentors name is Keary L. Flagg, He is the site coordinator for the Howard Elementary School after scholl program which is located in Oakland,Ca. The main job that he does is coordinate the entire program. Basically what that means is that he supervise the staff, observe and evaulate their performance, and make sure that the instructors are doing what he says that they are going to do for the program. He coordinates all aspects of the program including the schedualing of day-to-day activities. He develops all of the special activities. He also works with the school day staff to align the after school program with the school days, and the main point of contact for everything. In basic words, the after school principle.
After high-school, he figured that he wanted to work at schools to work with children. He majored in Liberal Studies and minored in Communications in college. A big skill that you need for this job is patience, because of them bad kids!! But you definetely have to have great communication skills. Then theres the other skills like math, reading and writing, when you are helping the kids after school with their homework.
The advice that he has for someone trying to obtain a job like this is to make sure that you are commited to a job like that, because 9 times out of 10, the money wont keep you, and talk to other people who do the job so you can get ideas. "You can be a copy cat, just copy the right cat." lol.
On a day to day basis, i asked him how annoyed and tired is he a the end of the day. He noticed that he has kind of lost patience with the kids, and it somewhat is affecting him because he sometimes gets that way with his kids. Since he has delt with so much drama for hours and have to drive a far distance home, it gets very annoying. But with every bit of annoyance, there is a bit gratification that comes with it because you may do something that helps a kid out, or even helps change the life of a child. Even little stuff when the kids will come up saying how great of a site coordinator that he is.

Post 10:
So the on scheduale hours that i need to have on my WLE are 66.5 hours by now. I am at 59.5 hours. I am 7 hours behind because i didnt attend my internship one wednesday because I needed to attend my grandfathers funeral. What I plan to do to make up for that day is I guess work a couple extra days since it wont be open during spring break. I hope they will make an acception though because its like come on now, its my grandfathers death, i shouldnt have to even trip off no hours because of that.
What I did today was do a lot of attendence catch up. It took up most of the day. During the last part, we discussed what I am going to do for my WLE project. Its hard because I am in need of a camera because I want to do a documentary. I aked the teacher about it before, but they never got back to me. I will have to check again. The documentary though is about how the after school program is a place of extra learning, as well as a place to do extra activities and expand the kids talents. The video will show clips of each portion of the whole after school time. and have a couple interviews fro parnets, students, and the afterschool program staff about what they think of the whole program. Its going to be cool. If I cant get a camera, I dont have i back up plan yet. This is going to be a little tuff considering there are only 5 WLE days left.

My day consisted of a lot of attendence catch up. I had to get all of the attendence from january to the end of february put into the computer records. My mentor, well i dont know what he did, i was not paying attention to that. I wanted to get my work over with so i was mainly focused on that at the time. Later on in the day, i pretty much just sat back in the class and watched the 5th graders. I also try and help them with their homework etc if they ask for help.
For the project for WLE, my original plan was to actually make a documentary on the day, and what the parents, students, and faculty think of the after school program. But the fact that its hard to get access to a camera from my school, that idea might have to change, but i dont know what it will be this time though at the moment.

Post 6: Grading Myself for WLE
For Mastery of Knowledge, i would give myself a 2. An example of when i had to use this skill is knowing my normal process in the mornings, when it comes to taking count of snacks, and student attendence. I have learned a lot but havent got to prove that i know it still yet. So i will actually give myself a 3.
I do not remember what the Aplication of Knowledge or the Metacognition skill exactly is at the moment.
For my leadership skill grade, i would give myself a 3.5. An example of this is when i take the turn of going around asking if anyone needs assistance, or just helping out with tutoring or watching the kids without being asked to or told to do that.
For my college work habbits, i would give myself a 4. I am always on time, respectful to everyone, and i do what is told with no problems.

Post 5: Job Shadow Day : February 10
I am developing a lot of skills at my WLE. At my WLE, I have learned to work with children. That i defenetly can not do at school. If thats at school, i would consider them as slow adults. Other skills that I am developing at my internship is being put to work. In a classroom, its mostly sitting down and writing, but here, its more acivity. Instead of being taught, sometimes I am teaching the kids. Communicating Effectively is the one leadership skill that is used the most. When I am helping children with their homework, i have to know how to word things where they understand what I am saying. So thats mainly so far what I have gained at work that I cant gain so much in the classroom.
Post 1: Job Shadow Day: January 6th
I arrived at my WLE internship at 10:59 a.m. on the button, just a minute early then planned. My day started out cool. I'm interning at Howard Elementary in Oakland,Ca. My mentors name is Keary Flagg, who is my older brother. The job itself that my brother does is he is the site coordinator for the after school program at that school. What i am going to be doing there is helping out with things like taking attendence, helping with passing out snacks, working with the children, but helping out with the planning as well. It is a very interesting and fun job. I have the opportunity to see both aspects of the job, from the serious part when it cames to planning, to the other side of the job which is having fun with the kids.
When i pulled up at the school, my brother was already outside. From there he took me to the principles office and introduced me to the staff at the school. I signed in, and from there to room 15, which is the classroom my brother works in. As of then i watched him as he set up a whole chart to show the oakland unified school district on what theey plan on doing with the kids. Watching this process, i learned that managing this program is nothing simple. So from 11:15 to aroud 12, i seen the business aspect of the job. From there we went out to lunch, and coming back around one o' clock, thats when i got to see the other side of the job
Some of these kids at this school are bad, but they remind me of how i was back in elementary school. From there, i helped watch the kids and passs out snacks. Then from there we took our group to the classroom and i watched my brother as he taught the kids with math, helping them out woith their homework. I didnt get to see the whole after school part of the job as i left a 3:00 pm, but the program doesnt end until 5. But from what i seen, i can tell i am going to like this job and i am going to gain a lot of responsibility and organization skills as well as social skills.
